Temporary safeguarding payments

PharmData tracks data on a range of NHS pharmacy reimbursement, including the temporary safeguarding payment arrangements put in place where a pharmacy contractor’s dispensing business is negatively affected if prescribers systematically increase prescription duration length on a significant proportion of their prescription items, due to direct or indirect coercion by the local CCG.

What is the temporary safeguarding payments scheme?

Not to be confused with safeguarding (protecting vulnerable people from harm and abuse), temporary safeguarding payments are a scheme laid out in part XIVC of the Drug Tariff to allow for payments to be made to contractors in England who have suffered from local prescribers increasing the prescription duration on a large proportion of prescriptions; for example, if a local GP surgery were to move from 28-day prescribing to 56-day prescriptions or 90-day prescriptions.

There are 2 types of temporary safeguarding payments available:

For more information on the scheme, visit the PSNC page on temporary safeguarding payments

Be careful! Submitting a type 2 claim to NHSBSA will lead to them calculating what money, if any, you might be owed due to a reduced number of items being dispensed compared to what was expected. However, if they determine that you dispensed more items than would be expected, you might receive a negative payment instead!
